Cream cakes filled with jam and pots of tea helped raise more than £800 for an autistic charity thanks to a heroic mother’s efforts to raise money.
Mary Harvey, from Rainham, invited more than 70 people into her house for an afternoon tea in exchange for donations to Romford Autistic Group Support (RAGS).
Mary, whose son was diagnosed with autism in 2013, said she wanted to give something back to the charity that can’t do enough for her.
She said: “It was fantastic, although I think we experienced every sort of weather possible.
“We had a tombola, with over 35 donations and lots of freshly baked cakes.
“I kept looking around and seeing more people in my house.
“All the Victoria sponge and Eccles cake disappeared, but we somehow managed to have cake left over!
“I’m so pleased to be able to do this for RAGS, as they do amazing work without much money.”
